Impending Sounds : Josephine & The Artizans – Dies Irae EP

If you’re looking for a new slant on music then London based Josephine & The Artizans could be ‘just what the doctor ordered’ so to speak. The title track ‘Dies Irae‘ marries up hip-hop with opera in the words of the band ‘Hip-Hopera’. I thought no way, but it actually works rather well. In fact the operatic vocals are so crystal clear and right up there, which are quite reminiscent of Sarah Brightman. The production which was also done by the band lets you the listener hear every sound in pristine clarity. Who this appeal to is question. Simple young kids, indie fans and those who love the South Bank show will adore it. Last time opera was mixed with contemporary music was with Malcolm McLaren’s output back in the mid 80’s. Visionaries who acknowledge the past is the best way to describe this band. With their use of real instruments too they soon draw you in and the following three tunes only help to enhance my first thoughts of this appealing sound. I should mention ‘Let Me Go’ as this is possibly the strongest and most accomplished track here. Another bonus is that they are a very photogenic band, but for me the music is the real plus here.

So what do you think?
