Hailing from the Isle Of Wight The Champs may not be household name but I’m sure they’re heading in the right direction for bigger things. ‘Down Like Gold‘ is their debut album. The band is basically two brothers Michael and David Champion whose sound has an uncanny resemblance to Arcade Fire, which is great in my books. This is very evident with ‘Susannah‘ with it’s catchy piano riff. The pearl in the shell for me is ‘Only A Bullet Knows Where To Run‘ which even played live is a monster track. It builds up beautifully with its rapid chorus vocal delivery and the short sharp drum rolls. Incidently isn’t that such a cool name for a song, inspirational.
Whilst ‘My Spirit Is Broken‘ harks back to the sixties in its feel with great harmonies with a nod to The Byrds possibly. Strangely there’s a hidden segment at the end very ambient but somehow it works. ‘St. Peters‘ vocally its delivery wouldn’t be out-of-place in a vast cathedral, angelic choirboys. Here the vocals are the main sound with an acoustic guitar to guide you along. The title track is a brooding affair that ignites slowly and draws you into their sound which encompasses many techniques. ‘White Satellite‘ is a fitting conclusion that you can sing along to and will repeatedly be played for many more moons. So take a chance on The Champs as I think you will want to hear more. 9/10.
