The ‘Play At Home‘ TV series was made by the innovative Channel 4 back in 1984 and highlighted a single artist in each show. Filmed the previous year this was about Swindon’s XTC who produced some of the best music I’ve ever heard, I just loved their lyrics. They are also a band I never saw live, though I did buy a ticket to see them. Sadly though the ‘English Settlement’ tour was cancelled in 1982 and they never toured again. I do hark on about this with Andy Partridge on Twitter to no avail. This show is recorded in and around their home town with some interesting insights into the band as a whole. They were for many years signed to Virgin Records and probably had one of the longest contracts with Richard Branson’s label. They continued to release material on Cooking Vinyl until 2005. Since then various band members have released solo material. Barry Andrews had left previously in 1979 and went on to form Shriekback.
