Hidden Gems : Julian Cope – Sunspots

With the demise of The Teardrop Explodes, lead singer Julian Cope launched a solo career. The first two albums didn’t set the world alight, ‘World Shut Your Mouth‘ (which incidentally didn’t include the single of the same name) and ‘Fried‘ (from which this hidden gem ‘Sunspots’ derives). Yet if you explore these albums there are many wonderful hidden delights from the Tamworth man. Ironically after leaving Mercury Records he had probably his most commercial phase of his career chart wise. His discography is forever expanding with a mixture of ambient and rock releases. You never know quite what you’re going to get from him, which is part of the appeal of him for me.

So should this have been a hit?
