Armed with just an acoustic guitar Tom Barrow has relies on his voice and his down to earth northern lyrics to deliver this his ‘Debut EP’. Leading off with ‘Space To Rent‘ is a fast paced tune very melodic delivered with a style belies this is first proper recordings. The second song reminds me of a youthful Paul Simon in delivery strangely enough it’s called ‘Schoolyard Games‘ which has no resemblance to ‘Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard‘. You could skip to this as children would in the playground.
The third song ‘Stuck In Shudehill‘ is his experience on trying to get home which at times becomes quite heated. Within it has these excellent words “Ten people asked me if I could spare some change…only got enough to get me home. Should have got a taxi but I have no notes“. How many of us can relate to that? The final track ‘Tipsy’ reminded me of a great band Energy Orchard’s rendition of ‘Madame George‘. This is possibly where you get to hear Tom’s vocals at their best.
