The Clash – London Calling – Released Today in 1979

Crikey this does make me feel really old as I remember not long started working in the record shop when this was released. The Clash’s third and possibly best album ever ‘London Calling‘ was a shout out that these guys were more than social deviants from the punk scene in London. This album reached out worldwide with its iconic album sleeve which was in part homage to Elvis Presley’s self titled debut album sleeve. How many people have you seen wearing a T-shirt with it adorned on, thousands even I used to have one at one time.

But let’s not forget it’s the music that is all important and this double album was packed with great songs based on their surroundings. Not least the title track an anthem in itself. It also demonstrated the bands ability to tackle different types of music, ‘The Guns Of Brixton’, being a perfect example. It’s one of those albums that you played repeatedly and often, I still do.  I wish to thank Nikki a fervent Clash fan residing in Canada who constantly reminds us all how good they were. Incidently check out her really good radio show ‘Everything and the Kitchen Sink‘ which can be downloaded too.
