Hidden Gems : The Wild Swans – Revolutionary Spirit

Labelled the best single released on Zoo Records by its owner Bill Drummond, the single ‘Revolutionary Spirit‘ was the debut single by The Wild Swans, fronted by Paul Simpson (formerly of The Teardrop Explodes). They came back a couple of times releasing three studio albums. When the band first split up we got two new bands, The Lotus Eaters (Jem Kelly and Ged Quinn) and Care (Paul with Ian Broudie). I have to say my T-shirt of this cover is one of my favourites to wear at gigs, as it brings back knowing glances from many people who acknowledge good music. Thankfully the entire bands output is still available which in itself is a refreshing change. The vinyl copy of this single now changes hands for a nice sum too. I was lucky enough to see all the incarnations of the live band too, including a great night in Leicester in the early 80’s, when they supported Echo And The Bunnymen. A night I’ll forever remember as the coach had no heating in the middle of winter – frozen!

So should this been a hit or a miss? To me this is a Classic!
