Well each year the Record Store Day gets bigger and bigger with more artists keen to add their products to the list of rarities released on vinyl. Lets not forget that they do have CD’s issued too for this day. But in general it’s all about that special piece of vinyl along with its 12″ sleeve to marvel over. Already there’s some leaked products that will be available to entice back into those once taken for granted record shops. I have my eye on a few products as usual, but I won’t say which in case you all try and buy them all before me! But I’ll be up very early!
I had a chat with Darren on the net who owns VoxBox Music record store in Edinburgh that the event is more than just purchasing a record. It’s when enthusiasts come together and invariably queue from some ungodly hour waiting until the shops open. During those hours you can make new friends and discuss what was the best period of an artist’s career. You may not even like each others favourite artists but the common bond is your love of music. The day too usually has some special extras laid on by the shop, be it signing or an artists playing live on the premises.
I’m torn by the sponsorship of this years event, this being Clark’s Shoes, as they’re under investigation for slave labour around the world. But for such a non-music company taking an interest means that the day has attracted some clout in the world of sponsorship. Don’t forget too that you can purchase the wonderful DVD of ‘Last Shop Standing‘ at most outlets. So get planning fellow music lovers for the best Record Store Day event yet. Let’s hope the weather is clement on 20 April 13.
