Review : Danny Baker – BBC’s Great Album Showdown

Last night I watched the always entertaining Danny Baker kick off a new television show ‘Great Album Showdown‘ on BBC4 and the first show was about Rock. This is where Danny is joined by three other celebrities talking about their first albums, in the era of the twelve-inch analogue plastic vinyl. The first panel consisted of Stephen Street (Producer), Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) and Kate Mossman (Journalist). They talked about such diverse artists as David Bowie, The Clash, Kraftwerk, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin and The Smiths. What was apparent was the love they all had with those vinyl albums something that’s been lost with the advent of tasteless CD’s and now invisible downloads. They discussed how an album was put together including the order of the tracks and that there was the two sides to each disc. They then spoke about the cover artwork along with the credits which were clearly visible. I hope the rest of the series is just as good this opening instalment.

  1. Episode Two : Pop – Boy George, writer Grace Dent and journalist David Hepworth were the panel this time – I wasn’t disappointed either with this show – keep them coming.

  2. Episode Three : R&B – Mica Paris, actor and soul aficianado Martin Freeman and DJ Trevor Nelson were on the panel – Quite a heated at times yet no less entertaining show – captivating.

How refreshing Kate Mossman shows Blood Sweat & Tears Child is Father to the Man album cover demonstrating a musical diversity greater than your average music journo trying to be hip, radical, cool etc. Great piece of nostalgia, while I love the quality and ease of the CD format the album cover was a treasure in its own right. Good show Danny

So what do you think then ....
