Continuing this very popular viewed series of Hidden Gems (tracks which should have been hits). I’ll present you a track via YouTube, Daily Motion, Soundcloud or another site. These posts are for the music only.
Though this Sparks song did scrape into the UK Top 40 for a couple of weeks, a number one in Germany, it never really got my coverage apart from an excellent session live on BBC Radio One’s Simon Mayo show. Yes they had number one’s but had not had a real hit since ‘Beat The Clock‘. It was a real return to form with the album ‘Gratuitous Sax And Senseless Violins‘. The next album was re-workings of old hits, ‘Plagiarism‘ that included a far better version of ‘The Number One Song In Heaven‘. If you watch both videos there is a common theme, Ron is the bad guy and Russell is seen as the good guy. A real Sparks highlight for me was taking my 11 year old daughter to see them play in Islington 2008 where they performed a single album chronologically each night for twenty-one days – we saw ‘Number One In Heaven‘. They are still going strong with a UK tour in the autumn.
So should this have been a bigger hit or a miss?
