It’s not often that something out of the blue happens on a UK music programme, but it sure did last week. Paul Buchanan, lead singer of The Blue Nile, appeared on ‘Later With Jools Holland‘, with Mr Holland accompanying the reclusive singer. It is quite an event if there is a record release let alone a TV performance. Having only released four studio albums in a little over thirty years it is great see he has a solo album out on 21 May 2012. That night’s show also included a powerful set by Paul Weller. He played tracks of his new album but Mr. Buchanan’s part of the transmission was for me essential viewing.
He performed the title track from his forthcoming album ‘Mid Air‘ which has already had many rave reviews from those lucky enough to have access to his recordings. This live performance which you can watch again below shows how wrapped up Paul is in his music and gives a rendition that keeps you waiting on each word slowly produced from his lips. Take note people little sometimes is more. Jools Holland backed him admirably and I always amazed by his input. It is as if he has a jukebox stored up there in his head.
Talking of the album if you’re quick you can order a limited box set. This includes a bonus disc of demo’s and other tracks which did not make it to the finished product. The album also includes ‘My True Country‘ and ‘Two Children‘. Now just sit back relax and enjoy Paul Buchanan and as a special bonus have a listen to Paul on Jools radio show below playing a Beatles classic tune.
