Hidden Gems : Shriekback – My Spine (Is The Bassline)

Continuing this very popular viewed series of Hidden Gems (tracks which should have been hits). I’ll present you a track via YouTube, Daily Motion, Soundcloud or another site. These posts are for the music only.

Today is Record Store Day 2012 and I thought I would dig out some old singles I still have and this was on the top of the pile. The band Shriekback was a group made up of ex members of XTC and Gang Of Four. They released a few singles on Y Records (home to Pigbag) before being snapped up by Arista. Unfortunately then everything seemed to get out of control for them with way out mixes of each single. This was after a promising start by the band that brought us the best indie funk bass lines around. They even opened for the Simple MindsOnce Upon A Time‘ tour back in 1986 in the UK. I could have picked the chosen track or ‘Lined Up‘ as both are essential listening. Other notable songs by them included ‘Nemesis‘, ‘Gunning For The Buddha‘, ‘The Big Hush‘ and the excellent cover of KC & The Sunshine Band’sGet Down Tonight‘.

So should this have been a hit or a miss?
